Why Miele costs more than every other brand to install
Miele is the only major dishwasher brand sold in the US that ships every unit hardwired by design. There is no plug-and-cord option. The factory tail wire exits the rear of the unit at lower-right; the installer terminates it inside a flush-mounted junction box wired to a dedicated 20-amp branch circuit. This single design choice is the entire reason Miele install costs run 40 to 60% above Bosch or KitchenAid for the same kitchen.
The 2026 install cost stack for a Miele replacement looks like this. Numbers reflect a survey of Miele Concierge program pricing and independent licensed-electrician + appliance-tech bids in the New York, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, and Los Angeles metros (April 2026):
| Scenario | Appliance tech labor | Electrician fee | Total labor |
|---|---|---|---|
| Like-for-like Miele replacement (existing hardwire) | $150-200 | $75-150 | $225-350 |
| Replacing a plug-in dishwasher (convert outlet to junction box) | $150-200 | $150-250 | $300-450 |
| First-time install (new water + drain + 20A circuit + junction box) | $200-350 | $300-600 | $500-950 |
| Miele Concierge bundle (replacement, includes electrician) | Fixed price | $349-499 | |
Miele series by series
Miele sells three residential dishwasher series in the US: the G 5000 (entry tier), the G 7000 (premium), and the G 7000 panel-ready integrated. All three are hardwire-only. Install procedure is identical across series.
- G 5000 series ($1,099 to $1,499 MSRP per the Miele USA dishwasher line page). Front-control, ComfortClose door, AutoOpen drying optional. Install: $225 to $350 on existing hardwire.
- G 7000 series ($1,899 to $2,599 MSRP). Adds AutoDos automatic detergent dispensing, AutoOpen drying standard, M Touch flush controls. Install: $250 to $400, plus 20 minutes for the installer to walk the owner through AutoDos PowerDisk loading.
- G 7000 panel-ready ($2,599 to $3,499 MSRP). Accepts custom cabinet panel up to 14 pounds. Panel mounting adds $75 to $200 install time plus $300 to $1,000 for the cabinet panel itself. See panel-ready dishwasher installation cost.
The Miele Concierge program
Miele USA runs a Concierge installation program through authorised dealers. The bundle includes:
- Pre-install site survey (electrician confirms existing circuit, plumber confirms hookup adequacy)
- Delivery and removal of old unit
- Licensed electrician for hardwire termination
- Appliance technician for plumbing and cabinet mounting
- 30-minute training session on AutoDos, M Touch controls, and the Miele app
- Warranty registration filed by the installer
- 30-day callback included for adjustments
Concierge pricing runs $349 to $499 fixed for a replacement in a standard kitchen, scaled up for first-time installs and panel-ready models. In high cost-of-living metros (NYC, SF, Boston) Concierge often comes out cheaper than independent licensed-electrician + appliance-tech because the dealer has volume pricing with their installer partners.
For owners outside an authorised dealer's service radius, Miele directs you to a licensed electrician via the IBEW or the Mr. Electric national franchise, and a Miele-trained appliance installer via the dealer network. The cost stack is unchanged but coordination falls on the homeowner.
AutoOpen drying door clearance
Miele G 7000 series uses AutoOpen drying: at the end of a wash cycle the door pops open 6 to 8 inches automatically to vent steam and accelerate evaporative drying. This is a meaningful drying improvement (Consumer Reports rates Miele AutoOpen the most thorough dry on the market), but it imposes a kitchen planning constraint that catches buyers off guard.
The door opens unannounced during the drying cycle, typically 2 to 4 hours after wash start. A peninsula or island kitchen layout with the dishwasher facing a high-traffic aisle becomes a tripping hazard. The AutoOpen function can be disabled in the M Touch menu, but doing so defeats the dry-rating advantage that justified the G 7000 premium.
Planning rule of thumb: ensure 36 inches of clear floor in front of the dishwasher face for the AutoOpen cycle. If the kitchen layout cannot accommodate, downgrade to the G 5000 series (which does not have AutoOpen) or position the dishwasher in a less-trafficked run.
Hardwire conversion details
If your kitchen has an existing dishwasher outlet (NEMA 5-15R, 120V, 20A) rather than a junction box, an electrician needs to:
- De-energise the dishwasher circuit at the panel
- Remove the outlet and box
- Install a junction box at the same location (or a different position if Miele's rear-panel tail wire exits at a different point)
- Terminate the Miele tail wire conductors (white, black, green) into the junction box with wire nuts
- Box up and label the connection
- Energise and test
Per NEC 422.16(B)(2), the dishwasher must be served by a disconnect within sight (the panel breaker counts, or a dedicated disconnect under the sink). The Miele's tail-wire termination inside a junction box satisfies this provided the breaker is accessible. Total electrician time: 45 to 75 minutes. Cost: $150 to $250 in most US metros.

Permit requirements for Miele install
A like-for-like Miele replacement in an existing junction box rarely triggers an electrical permit; the work is treated as appliance swap. Converting an outlet to a junction box (or installing a new dedicated circuit) does require an electrical permit in most US jurisdictions. Plumbing permit is required only for first-time installs with new supply or drain runs.
Permit costs vary by jurisdiction: New York City charges $80 to $120 for an electrical permit, San Francisco $100 to $200, Houston $50 to $80, suburban Chicago $40 to $80. See permits required for dishwasher installation for the jurisdiction-level detail.
Total cost of ownership context
Miele's install premium is a one-time cost. The brand's differentiation is in expected service life: Miele USA publishes a 20-year design life on the dishwasher motor (versus the 10 to 12 years standard for most brands). At Miele's pricing, you are paying for 20 years of use rather than 12, and an extra $150 to $250 in electrician fee at install spread across that life is a rounding error.
Where the math does not work: a renter or short-stay homeowner (under 5 years) gets none of the longevity benefit and pays the install premium. For a 30-year forever-home, Miele is the right answer. For a starter-home flip, Bosch 300 Series or KitchenAid 47 dBA is the better value.

FAQ
Does Miele offer a plug-and-cord conversion kit?
No. Miele USA does not sell a plug-and-cord adapter for its dishwashers. The hardwire-only design is a deliberate engineering decision; modifying it voids the warranty. Plan for the electrician cost from the start.
Is Miele installation worth the premium?
For a 15 to 20 year hold in the same kitchen, yes; the $150 to $250 electrician premium amortises to about $15 per year. For a 3 to 5 year hold, no; you are paying for longevity you will not see. Match the appliance tier to the expected hold period.
Can Home Depot install a Miele?
Home Depot sells some Miele G 5000 series units but does not include Miele in its standard appliance install package, because Home Depot's installer partners are not licensed electricians and cannot perform the hardwire termination. Home Depot installers will fit the unit in the bay, do the plumbing, and leave the electrical to a third-party licensed electrician hired separately. Net: not actually cheaper.
What happens if I just hardwire it myself?
In most US jurisdictions, unlicensed electrical work on a dishwasher branch circuit is permitted for homeowners on their own residence (Massachusetts and Connecticut are exceptions). Doing so still voids Miele's warranty in the event of an electrical fault, and your homeowner's insurance may deny a claim for any subsequent electrical fire originating from the connection. We do not recommend it.
How long does Miele installation take?
Concierge bundle: 2 to 3 hours, single visit. Independent electrician + appliance tech: 3 to 4 hours total elapsed time, often spread across two visits (electrician first, appliance tech second day). First-time install with new circuit, water and drain: 5 to 7 hours plus permit lead time.
